Thousands Lost Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Weather Systems

Around 25,000 households in south-east Queensland found themselves without power on Monday morning after powerful weather events impacted the state, generating powerful gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Extensive Impact

Residents observed giant hailstones as large as seven centimeters in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that multiple regions across the state had been affected by significant hail.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with dozens of response units deployed to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 residents in Victoria also experienced power outages after Melbourne recorded its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

Emergency response teams responded to over five hundred requests for assistance across the region, mainly for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

  • Werribee - saw substantial storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing area - numerous assistance requests
  • Wyndham area - 179 emergency requests

At one point on yesterday, more than 28,000 energy customers in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was forecast to be the most rainy day, with persistent severe weather risk anticipated across various areas of both areas.

Health Warning

Public health experts cautioned that there was an greater possibility of weather-related respiratory issues across the countryside regions, particularly given the current weather patterns.
